Heathrow Express is one of the UK’s most important transport links, connecting Heathrow Airport to central London in just 15 minutes. Since launching in 1998, it has carried over 110 million passengers and built a reputation for speed, convenience and reliability.
As part of its continued efforts to modernise operations, Heathrow Express introduced a cloud-based ticketing application. Delivered by a third-party supplier and hosted in AWS, the system quickly became central to the passenger experience and needed to meet high expectations for availability and performance.
While moving to the cloud brought greater flexibility, it also introduced new risks, particularly around supplier dependency. Heathrow Express recognised the need to prepare for the potential failure of a key provider and ensure continued access to the systems critical to daily operations.
To address this, the team partnered with Escode, part of NCC Group, to implement an Escrow as a Service: Replicate agreement. The solution gives Heathrow Express legal access to a separately hosted and continuously updated copy of their live environment, ensuring continuity if the software supplier is no longer able to support the system.
